THIS IS FALU STORBAND:
Falu Storband began in 1978. Of the original bandmembers approximately
half are still with the band. The orchestra, consisting of 20 members, is
arranged as a traditional big band with five saxophones, four trombones,
four trumpets and a rhythm section made up of two guitars, a bass, a piano
and drums. We also have our own singer. The band has set high musical
standards and rehearses every week under the direction of Per Westblom.
Our repertoire contains a wide variety of music that appeals to most tastes.
At dances we play traditional dancing music with classic big band
arrangements from the likes of Count Basie's, Duke Ellington's and Glenn
Miller's repertoires. At our concerts we most often play more modern music
from, for example, Thad Jones and Bob Mintzer.
Past leaders of the band were Rolf Cederberg, Bertil Spåman and Leif
Borgert. The band has benefited tremendously from the knowledge and
leadership of these three men. The band's present leader is Per Westblom.
His enthusiasm and skillful direction have given the band a musical
"vitamin injection".
Through the years Falu Storband has collaborated with many well known
musicians and artists such as Svante Thuresson, Nils Landgren, Meta Roos,
Claes Janson, Nils Lindberg, Putte Wickman, Jan Allan, Lena Willemark, Sharon Dyall and Örjan Fahlström, just to name a few.
We have had very rewarding collaborations with both Falu Kammarkör and Borlänge Kammarkör which have resulted in several church concerts around Sweden. At these concerts we have worked with soloists such as Lena Willemark.
Falu Storband participated once in a big band competition. This was at the
"Gothenburg International Music Festival 1991". In competition with both
orchestras from Sweden and other countries, we won first prize. The final
judgement was made by the well known trombone player, Phil Wilson.
A few years ago the orchestra started the "Falu Storband Dancing Club", a
dance club for those who like to dance to authentic big band music.
